week 7
So I was a little surprised we didn't discuss the Florida school shooting more as a class. Not necessarily the politics end with our separate views on gun laws or anything, but the social media revolution stirring within the survivors. These students are something special, because this is the first time I can recall that an outbreak of students have been the driving force after a terrible tragedy. Granted their parents, siblings, friends, and teachers have also been involved, but it's the students' voices who the media is focusing on. Part of this is probably due to the direct rawness of the survivors' stories (therefore straight truth of attack--a journalists dream), but the majority is the emotional factor that comes with seeing these kids--that's right, children--on a stage, in front of thousands, pouring their hearts out for someone to listen. Emotion is a driving force in grabbing someone's attention whether it be our politicians, or the voters. You can't deny feeling some type of emotion when you hear a 15 year old begging for more gun control in this nation. It doesn't matter if you're for or against tighter gun control, young or old, consistently involved in politics or not--emotions of some sort will arise. There's a saying that there is no bad press because any press gets communities talking...well this is one of those instances. I'm glad people are going out of their comfort zones to make others put out of theirs. I certainly do not have a solution, but working towards one should be a top priority.
